Caddie Life: Gary Gall

Gary has now been caddying for several seasons at the world famous Carnoustie Golf Links. In the first instalment of our series “Caddie Life”, we dig deeper into how Gary found himself a caddie gig at an Open Championship venue.

1. How did you get started as a caddie?

Originally I caddied at Carnoustie Golf Links while at school to earn some money. However in 2017 a good friend (Paul Drummond, now European Tour caddy for Espen Kofstad) asked me if I would be interested in caddying in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. I have caddied in the Dunhill each year since.

On a day to day basis I caddie at Carnoustie and in 2021 I was fortunate enough to caddy for Manon De Roey in the AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie.

2. What is your favourite thing about caddying?

Being outdoors, meeting people from varying walks of life and helping my golfer enjoy their round

3. Tell us a interesting caddying story!

I was caddying for a guy who had a strange pre shot routine (think Alex Noren!). Anyway on 12th hole at Carnoustie my golfer hit his second shot in the bushes. As I picked the ball out, one of the other caddies said to my golfer “can I ask you about your practice swing”.

My guy, a little hot under the collar after hitting in the bush, replied “I really don’t think now is the best time to ask me that brother”.

The other caddie sheepishly walked away. I told my golfer to go walk 30 yards, look at the green layout and “clear your head”.

This is a great example of knowing when to stay quiet, yet also being an amateur psychologist.

4.What advice would you give to someone beginning their caddying journey?

Be brave. Confidence is everything. Go talk to experienced caddies, shadow them for a round or two carefully listening and paying attention to what they do.

Attitude. Dress professionally, research the course history, walk the course and make your own notes.

Check out if there is a caddie program and enrol.
